When you owe money to a creditor (e.g., a bank, credit card company, mortgage lender, doctor, hospital, finance company), the lender is entitled to demand repayment. If you are unable to repay, the lender may file a suit against you. The suit asks a judge to enter an order finding that you owe the lender money. That entitles the lender to take further legal action against you.
